In this Spotlight Series article, we’d like to introduce you to one of ContentLab’s most prolific authors: Najia Gul.

(We’re not joking: She’s written over 85 articles in her technical writing career!)

Najia is a data scientist and technical writer with an interest in artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), and real-time data. And coming from a background in agency-level writing, Najia helps ContentLab create top-tier technical content.

Getting to Know Najia

Najia has extensive technical writing and development experience under her belt — and this experience shines through in her work. In the interview below, we’ll introduce you to Najia and highlight some of the qualities that make her such an effective technical writer.

What is your background in tech? Where do you currently work, and what is your role?

I completed an undergraduate degree in software engineering, specializing in data science.

I currently work at IBM as a data science consultant. I work with our enterprise clientele, helping develop end-to-end machine learning (ML) solutions.

What inspired you to become a technical writer, and what keeps you motivated in this field?

I find technical writing low-stress and highly flexible. By that, I mean there’s some room for creativity. Unlike other fields in tech, where you might be hard-pushed by looming deadlines, technical writing is a bit slower. It’s a more thoughtful, deliberate process, where ideas can be nurtured and developed. That’s what keeps me motivated and engaged!

Seeing a piece I’ve written get published and then receiving prompt feedback is also incredibly gratifying.

What attracted you to work for ContentLab?

I wanted to stay abreast of the latest trends in the tech industry — and this drew me to ContentLab.

As a data scientist, I’m constantly immersed in technology. But I wanted to broaden my perspective beyond the confines of my role. Writing for ContentLab’s diverse clientele offers me the unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge topics in tech.

It’s not just about sharing my insights: It’s also about continuously learning and growing by exploring new developments and viewpoints within the industry.

This continuous learning journey is what truly attracted me to ContentLab.

Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on?

Having written over 85 pieces, selecting a single favorite isn’t easy. However, one project that stands out is an article I authored for one of ContentLab’s clients, Mattermost. The article is titled “How AIOps Enhances Operational Efficiency.”

This piece was particularly engaging because it blended two of my favorite domains: AI, where I have considerable expertise, and DevOps, an area I’ve always been eager to dive deeper into.

Additionally, this article required me to balance hands-on application and technical analysis in a way that I found particularly enriching. It was a learning experience that helped me better understand — and appreciate — how these two fields intersect to drive efficiency.

How do you approach gathering information and conducting research for technical writing projects?

I rely heavily on reputable sources such as academic journals, industry publications, and blogs from companies that are experts in their fields to gather accurate and up-to-date information.

I believe in a multi-faceted approach to research. For instance, while working on a project related to AI, I dive into the latest research papers and participate in relevant forums and discussions to gain practical insights.

Staying updated with the latest trends is crucial in the technical writing field. To do this, I engage with a variety of learning mediums. This includes attending webinars, subscribing to and reading specialized newsletters, and listening to technology-focused podcasts.

How do you ensure that technical content is accurate, up-to-date, and user-friendly for the intended audience?

I think user-friendliness is achieved by understanding the audience’s knowledge level and needs. In my writing process, this crucial information is provided through detailed content briefs crafted by the content strategists at ContentLab. These briefs guide me in tailoring the technicality and approach of the content to align with the audience’s preferences and experience level.

Feedback also plays a crucial role. I’m really grateful to work alongside a team of exceptional editors and reviewers at ContentLab, whose insights are invaluable. They help refine my work to ensure I use clear and concise language.

What’s your go-to method for overcoming writer’s block or creative challenges?

The best approach is to step away and give my mind a rest. Watching YouTube videos is a hobby of mine, so I’ll watch videos sometimes to take a break and reset.

I also find that discussing ideas with like-minded individuals can be incredibly beneficial. Engaging in conversations with people who understand the creative process can provide new insights and inspire different angles to approach the topic.

How do you balance your work-life commitments to maintain a healthy work-life balance?

In my current career stage, maintaining a healthy work-life balance comes fairly easily. I tend to have ample free time! So, while there are undoubtedly challenging days when work demands intensify, they are balanced by periods where I have significant leisure time.

This contrast makes the busier days more manageable and makes me appreciate the quieter moments. I find this ebb and flow between busier and more relaxed periods key to maintaining a healthy balance.
