Cultivating Talent at DevBuild

Driving the forefront of fintech innovation, we at Rocket Companies® are passionate about growing alongside our team members. We dedicate ourselves to helping our vibrant city of Detroit, Michigan become “the Silicon Valley of the Midwest.”

One of our top goals is cultivating exceptional talent. We genuinely believe if you want to be something, at Rocket, you can — and we’re here to help you every step of the way.

If you’re already a Rocket Companies team member with an interest in technology and a desire to advance your career, DevBuild might be just the program for you. DevBuild is a 19-week virtual coding boot camp designed to turn you into a software engineer, no matter your current position within our organization, Rocket Companies.

Why Become a Software Engineer?

In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, there’s no shortage of reasons to become a software engineer. If you’re looking to level up your career or considering a change, software engineering is a solid choice.

Benefit #1: Enjoy Competitive Pay and Job Security

It’s no secret software engineering positions pay well. However, did you know that this field is also amongst the most secure in the market? In fact, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a job growth rate of 22 percent between 2020 and 2030 — much higher than average.

Benefit #2: Harness Your Creative Side

Working as a software engineer allows you to show your creative side. No project is the same as any other. You’ll get to think of different ways to fix bugs, solve problems, and build applications. Although it may not be fine art, it’s creatively rewarding.

Many software engineers enjoy the option to work remotely. Being able to work remotely offers a host of benefits. From the freedom to travel to convenience, the ability to work from anywhere is a bonus.

As a software engineer, you won’t be isolated from your coworkers. You’ll usually be collaborating with a bigger team, including other creative developers such as yourself. You’ll also communicate with colleagues from various departments, rounding out your experience and keeping work interesting.

Benefit #4: Exciting and Innovative

Being a software engineer puts you at the forefront of technological innovation. Software engineering is a satisfying occupation with vast opportunities for growth and learning.

Here at Rocket Companies, we are passionate about developing and leveling up team members. We want you to succeed and thrive. So, we teamed up with Grand Circus to create our software engineer training program: DevBuild.

Who Can Join DevBuild?

We developed DevBuild for any team member within our organization, Rocket Companies who wants to become a software engineer. We encourage our team members to pursue their passions, so if software development sparks your interest, dive right on in!

The vetting process starts by assessing your aptitude for development and eagerness to learn. Then, after a panel interview, the selected candidates can begin training with DevBuild.

It helps to know the basics of coding (whether self-taught or through previous training), as DevBuild is an intensive program. But if you are brand new to the world of software with no prior experience, don’t worry. Rocket Companies will help prepare you with some pre-workshops. We’ll talk more about this later in the article, so read on.

What Will You Learn at DevBuild?

We designed the 19-week DevBuild training program to prepare candidates for a long-lasting future career. The curriculum mainly focuses on C# and development within the ASP.NET MVC framework.

Participants partake in a variety of labs, mini-projects, and assessments every week. You’ll split your time between Rock Central and Grand Circus. Specifically, this means an average of three days of training at Grand Circus then two days of practice, review, and evaluation at Rock Central.

Topics the program covers include:

  • C# programming language
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Object-oriented programming (OOP)
  • Continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices
  • Databases
  • Front-end development
  • Unit testing
  • NET framework and model-view-controller (MVC) design
  • Angular platform

By the final two weeks, you’ll get to build a web application with the skills you’ve learned throughout the program.

After you successfully conquer the boot camp, we match you with one of our Technology teams to start your new career. You’ll leverage your previous skills along with the latest tricks you learned to build exciting new features and innovative fintech tools to help customers and internal teams.

Benefits of DevBuild

At the DevBuild training program, we focus on more than simply teaching you the technical skills (although that is a huge part of the program). We also provide real industry insights and introduce you to authentic use cases. This way, you’ll get to see all the ways you can use your new skills to make a difference.

DevBuild teaches both front-end and back-end development skills, giving you the tools to be a productive and the knowledge and ability to create your own software.

We believe a well-rounded education is what it takes to cultivate top-notch talent. We’re here to support you as you nurture your budding software development skills.

Plus, this training program is free for you to attend.

Setting You Up for Success

Speaking of support, are you completely new to the technological space? Nervous about delving into software engineering? Don’t be! Rocket Companies is here to help — even before you get started with the DevBuild boot camp.

Remember that vetting process we mentioned earlier? Before applying, here are some on-the-job pre-workshops we suggest you take to prepare. While these workshops are not required for you to apply to DevBuild, they are here to help you if you need them.

DevBuild Intro to Coding

This course is a remote coding workshop for beginners. Here, students code right alongside the instructors.

You’ll communicate through Zoom and work within CodePen.io (a code editing website) in real-time with your teacher. This hands-on course provides the practice you need to get familiar with basic coding languages.

DevBuild Intro to Front-End Development

After Intro to Coding, DevBuild Intro to Front-End Development is the follow-up course. In this workshop, you’ll extend what you just learned and delve deeper into the three major front-end frameworks: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

DevBuild Intro to C#

This course teaches you the core fundamentals of C# and .NET Core. You’ll also familiarize yourself with the functionality of the Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE) and other computer programming basics.

Depending on your comfort level with code and software, these courses are optional. However, if you want to get ahead of the game and stand out, they are a great option to build up your coding knowledge or give you a refresher.

Ready to Get Started?

When you’re ready to realize your dream of becoming a software engineer, DevBuild is here to help. With pre-workshops and a comprehensive (admittedly rigorous) 19-week boot camp, you’ll be on the right path to a technology-rich career.
